Top Best Crypto Wallets

A crypto wallet is an application, piece of code, physical medium, file or directory from which users can access their cryptocurrencies — more like your bank account in your hand. Unlike physical wallets that hold currencies, a crypto wallet does not store the cryptocurrency, instead, it stores a private key through which a user can access the cryptocurrency that is held on the blockchain.

wallets

Private keys are used to sign transactions in the blockchain. You can consider it like your password. It proves that a user is the owner of the digital assets. Losing your private key equals losing access to your cryptocurrencies.

Crypto wallets store these private keys. In hot wallets, private keys are stored online while they are stored offline in cold wallets.

Custodial and Non-custodial wallets

In custodial wallets, users are not fully responsible for their cryptocurrencies as their private keys are saved online in the wallet service provider’s server for example, an exchange like Binance, Kucoin, Lopeer, etc This implies that there is no permanent loss of private keys as they can be retrieved from the server.

In non-custodial wallets, private keys are not stored in a central server, instead, users are given full responsibility for their cryptocurrencies. Users are given a seed phrase (which is usually a 12-25 word phrase) on registration. This seed phrase is used to recover private keys when they are misplaced. There are no backup services, meaning that if the seed phrase is lost, the user loses access to his wallet account and all digital assets attached to that wallet.

In choosing crypto wallets, it is important to consider if it is a custodial or non-custodial wallet, on what device it runs on (mobile, desktop, web, or hardware), and the kind of cryptocurrencies it supports.

This article details the best crypto wallets and why we love them in no particular order

1). Wasabi Wallet

Wasabi wallet is a privacy-focused Bitcoin wallet that is non-custodial and open-source.

Why We Love It

Its key feature in regards to its privacy-oriented structure is its CoinJoin process. CoinJoin is a process of merging multiple payments from multiple senders into a single transaction to make it difficult for a third party to track the origin of individual payments. Wasabi wallet 2.0 improves this process by making it automatic by default.

Wasabi wallet generates a new address with the same private key for every transaction made. If a user wants to receive BTC, he has to create an address and send it to the sender. After the BTC is received, the address becomes invalid and the user would have to generate a new one if he wants to receive BTC again. This helps to ensure that users’ account information is private and secure.

ZenGo wallet is an open-source non-custodial mobile wallet available to both iOS and most Android devices.

Why We Love It

It is a keyless wallet. Instead of attaching users’ funds to a private key that can either be stored with the user (and risk losing it) or in the server (and risk hacking), ZenGo divides the private key into two parts; one stored in the server and the other stored in the user’s phone. For transactions to be signed, the two parts have to interact.

This also implies that there are no seed phrases for wallet recovery, instead, ZenGo scans the user’s face and stores an encrypted backup of their private key on the user’s cloud storage. If a user loses access to their wallet and wants to recover it, all that is needed is a face scan.
